Boman Irani’s Life Story

I recently came across a wonderful video from JoshTalks. They bring out incredible journeys of some interesting people to spark change in Indians.

The description of this video says Boman believes  that passion drives everyone to excel. I watched the video and loved it, but I totally disagree that it was passion that took Boman from a waiter to  a successful actor. It was such an engrossing video that goes for an hour. After watching it what occurred to me or rather made my belief firmer is that it takes a craftsmen mindset to build successful careers. Doesn’t make sense?

Read this link in http://www.calnewport.com/about. I am a follower of Cal Newport’s Career Capital Theory. In this theory, Cal argues the need to develop a deliberate strategy to develop rare and valuable skills, instead of following passion!  According to him,

…passion is something you cultivate through hard work, not the starting point in your quest for a satisfying career

You must read his book So Good They Can’t Ignore You, for you to soak in the concept and get what he is saying.

When I watched Boman’s story I couldn’t help but appreciate how he built his career. It was a carefully crafted one. Especially the way his photography career pans out (see 21:55 in the video). He fought it out like a craftsmen! If this thought intrigued you, or even if you disagree, reach out to me, would love to talk about this with people and gain different perspectives.
